Parra

It was only a matter of time before Parra got his first U.S. museum show. I’m just happy it’s taking place in my current city of residence. Parra: Weirded Out opens this Saturday at SFMOMA, and features an expansive mural which extends across the 60-foot wall of the museum’s second-floor landing. The new work incorporates many of the Dutch artist’s characteristic motifs, along with his signature hand-drawn approach to graphic design.

Like Keith Haring and Victor Moscoso before him, Parra’s work is deeply rooted in Pop art and the experimental graphics of the 1960s. The largely self-taught artist began his design career drawing flyers and posters for music venues in Amsterdam in the 1990s, and has since collaborated with the likes of Nike, Converse, Vans, Heineken, Duvel, Incase and Stones Throw Records.

The exhibition, on view from March 31 through July 29, was organized by Joseph Becker, SFMOMA assistant curator of architecture and design. And if you’re in town, Parra will sit down with Becker and Moscoso on Tuesday, April 3 at noon to talk about their distinct styles, approaches and how their collaborations with both large corporations and antiestablishment outfits have yielded inspiring results.
