In 2000, Fortune Magazine said that “water promises to be to the 21st century what oil was to the 20th century: the precious commodity that determines the wealth of nations.” Twelve years later, that statement still rings true. And for three months in the spring of 2013, the New York City skyline will be transformed by The Water Tank Project, raising awareness to water as a precious resource.
Grounded in the inspirational power of public art, The Water Tank Project was conceived by New York-based not-for-profit Word Above the Street. With the goal of inspiring millions to be more responsible with water in their daily lives, they will transform around 300 rooftop water tanks across all five boroughs into works of art.
The tanks will be wrapped with original artwork on the subject of water from established and emerging artists, as well as New York City students. And so far, everyone from Jay-Z to Ed Ruscha has be linked to the project as well.
Want to get involved? On March 1, 5% of Whole Foods’ sales in NYC will be donated to The Water Tank Project. For more information and to keep updated, check out their site, follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook.
