When your store has a cult following, the next move is to expand. Last Friday, that’s exactly what Dover Street Market did in Tokyo. Comme des Garçons founder Rei Kawakubo opened London’s Dover Street Market market in 2004, and plans to open as many as five other stores (including one New York) in the near future. But right now, his latest masterpiece is located in one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world.
Double the size of its London counterpart, Dover Street Market Ginza is a six-floor, 2,500-square-meter shop in the west wing of Ginza Komatsu, a historic department store built in 1946, demolished three years ago and reopened Friday.
“I want to create a kind of market where various creators from various fields gather together and encounter each other in an ongoing atmosphere of beautiful chaos: the mixing up and coming together of different kindred souls who all share a strong personal vision,” says Kawakubo. “I would like for DSM to be the place where fashion becomes fascinating.”
With a wide spectrum of brands ranging from Supreme, A Bathing Ape and visvim, to Adam Kimmel, Alexander Wang and Marni, to Givenchy, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent, Dover Street Market Ginza has already become a must-visit retail destination.
